CB’s help pass the time of day…
Did you ever ever go out fishing and felt that you should rename the lake you were fishing in the “dead sea”?? I sure have. During those slow fishing times when you even get excited when you catch bottom or a weed, it’s really nice to have a CB radio with (a hand held CB Radio really works nice) and get on line to talk to your other fishin’ buddies or to family back at the cabin. What do you talk about??? Well the important stuff comes to my mind – what’s for dinner and stuff like that! It can really be fun and certainly passes the time of day – and who knows – when you least expect it, you may tie into the lunker you went out for!! Enjoy! Happy Boater.
Stay in Touch – be a CB Buddy…
This time of the year, a lot of folks come up to northern Minnesota for a drive up the North Shore of Lake Superior to enjoy it’s breathtaking scenery and wonderfully cool climate along the lake shore. When traveling with friends in separate vehicles, what a great convenience it is to be able to communicate with each other while traveling. You know – questions like “did you see that beautiful spot on the right?”, or “where should we stop and eat?” To have this type of convenience on board your vehicles, is really an inexpensive investment! A Hand Held CB Radio would work great for this application. CB Radios have come and gone in their popularity over the years, but they are becoming a very popular item once again. Get on board with technology when planning your next vacation!! Have a great time. Happy Boater.
CB Radios add fun to the gathering!
I can remember when CB Radios were a real fad in the early 60’s. Everyone had them and spent time at night just trying to think up a cute and catchy name (or handle) for their personal use as an identifier for them when on the air. I happened to have owned an ice cream parlor at the time and so I selected the handle “soda jerk” which was what the person behind the ice cream fountain was called. At that time I never got into the CB part of it too much – mainly everyone just rode around and listened to everyone else talk on the radios! It was fun – at least we thought it was fun at the time!! Now days, CB Radios have come back into focus and are widely used by truckers, boaters, school districts, and on construction sites. They even have been used now on search and rescue missions. Since CB’s are so inexpensive now, a lot of folks have a set available as an item of “fun entertainment” for the youngsters at family gatherings! I watched my young nieces play with them a couple of weeks ago and was amazed just how much enjoyment they had by running around the building or around the yard and then talking to the other person via a hand held CB Radio. Sure is nice we have so many great things available to us! Happy Boater.
NOAA weather alerts are of most importance…
This past weekend, I was on the water and the day started out really kind of calm and soothing. In just a couple of hours, I was in some giant swells and white caps and found that the wind was gusting to 40 mph. That kind of sea is not really fun to be out in. Now, I was on a small enough body of water at the time that it wasn’t a safety factor for me or the others on board, but if I had been on Lake Superior (for instance), it could have been quite another story. Having a radio on board capable of bringing in the NOAA weather alerts is an essential part of your safety equipment. You can obtain these alerts from a variety of CB radios, or VHF Marine Radios. Channel 16 is typically where you will be alerted by the US Coast Guard as to any fast developing weather systems or small craft warnings for the lake you may be on. Always put safety as a number one status level. Happy Boater.
When you catch the big one, who ya going to tell?
After spending a lot of time on the water, you realize that you can encounter great catching as well as “not so great” catching. (note that the “fishing” is ALWAYS good – just the catching varies!) When you catch that big one it sure would be nice to tell someone, wouldn’t it!! Those are the times it would be nice to have a CB Radio onboard as well as a VHF marine radio which has a range of approximately 20 miles over water when using the proper tall antenna. I’ve got a friend that has a great web store and deals in heavy duty fishing gear – the kind of stuff that makes you feel like a kid in a candy store!! I enjoyed a tour and wanted to share it with you guys. His site is www.reeldeepstore.com. Check it out! Happy Boater.
I wish I had had my CB with!
Two weeks ago, I took my grandson on a canoe ride – probably the ride of his life (at least I’m sure he’ll never forget it!) It was a calm morning and I thought it would be good exercise for this teenage boy to go out with me on a canoe ride around the lake. Now, the lake wasn’t all that big – probably a mile from one side to the other, but about the time we got to the other side, a frontal system came through and whipped up the waves until we found ourselves enveloped in white caps – about a foot and a half high! Well, that probably wouldn’t have been so bad, but I’m about 3 times his weight and it became precarious very quickly. When you try to keep a canoe going into the wind with the front end of the canoe nearly out of the water, you can imagine why I was having trouble! I moved forward to get the front end down and proceeded to paddle like crazy and I don’t think my grandson has ever worked so hard! I’ll give him credit – he didn’t stop until we got closer to home, but then pretty much caved in. Sure would have been nice (and safer) if I had been able to radio home on my CB Radio to have someone come out and tow us home! Oh well, – all ended well. Happy Boater.
CB’s and kids………
With the new technology out there in the field of CB radios, they’ve become very affordable. I have a set of handheld CB radios sitting at the cabin which we use for communicating with those out fishing or whatever. I realized this past week when we had some company, that those CB radios were a primary source of entertainment for the teenage youngsters we had as guests! They were kept busy just about all day long running from one side of the property to the other calling each other on the CB’s. That’s great fun – plus they got a lot of exercise and the “spin-off” benefits included such things as a great appetite and when it came time to settle down for the night, they were ahead of me!! Now, that’s a good investment! Enjoy your time out-of-doors! Happy Boater.
CB’s the way to go…
Over this past weekend, we invited a friend of my grandson over to enjoy a time at the cabin. They had a big time with a small set of hand held CB Radios. Hard to imagine running out of fun things to do when you have something like a set of CB Radios available! Dick Tracey – move over … here comes the new generation of super sleuths! These radios may be very functional as a safety device and handy as a weather warning device, but why not also class them as the ultimate “imagination station fun center”? No reason they can’t be fun also! A Hand Held CB Radio can go with you on an ATV, in the boat, or simply for a walk in the woods. Happy Boater.
Storm’s a brewin’ – are you ready?
I just came off the water. We had white caps that just pounded the boat when heading into them. It surely takes some of the relaxation out of the day on the water, but it’s all part of the outdoor communication device that will aid in giving you enough warning time to allow you to get off the water in time to keep everyone on board safe. If you are on a small body of water, maybe a CB Radio would suffice, but if you are negotiating the waves on a larger body of water, you owe it to yourself to invest in a very affordable VHF Marine Radio or at least a marine radio receiver capable of receiving the NOAA Weather channel which broadcasts 24/7 to keep everyone on the water safe. HAPPY BOATER.
CB brings us in on time for Supper!
We all know just how engrossed we get in our fishing when out on the lake. You always have that anticipation factor that really never goes away, but is stronger it seems just before you go in for the night. It’s not unusual to have that feeling that the next time around (or the next cast) the big one is waiting to bite! I’m sure if you’re honest, we’re all in that same boat with our feelings……
Well, that’s just what happened to me last weekend! Lo and behold, the hand held CB radio squawked and we realized that the gals had cooked supper and were calling us in. Now, that’s not a bad way to end the fishing day – with a great meal! …even if the “big one” eluded us once again.
Happy Boater.
