Hand held CB comes in handy!

This weekend I plan to head out for an ice fishing experience on the Lake of the Woods on the US/Canadian border in northern Minnesota.  I hope to tell you of the one I “got” rather than the one that “got away” when I return.  I would, however, like to take a moment to ponder the “comfort level” you get when you have with you an ability to communicate with those on shore as well as those in other fish houses on the lake.  A hand held CB radio can fill that bill nicely!  It’s compact, clear, and easy to use.  Why not take advantage of the modern day “nice-itys” that we have available today that were only a dream a few years back – and really not that far back.  Who knows where this will all end up in the very near future with the digital communication making the strides and achievements they have in recent history!  Exciting just to imagine!!  Have a good day and wish me luck fishing!!  Happy Boater

What’s the tie between Snow and CB’s?

Part of the exciting part of Northern Minnesota is that you really never really know what you’re going to wake up to in terms of the weather – no matter what the weatherman says!  The Lake Superior basin puts funny and strange “twists” into the normal patterns of weather and makes it quite unpredictable.  That’s what happened last night.  I woke up to another 4 inches of snow on the ground so plowing and snow blowing were two of the main items on the agenda for this morning.  As I was plowing and saw the county snowplow go by I noticed he was talking on his radio.  It occurred to me just how important it would be for each driver to have his own radio (very likely a CB Radio) to report traffic problems as well as road conditions to the county garage.  CB Radios and hand held CB radios are becoming more and more popular although they sure went through a dry spell from the early 70’s until the mid 90’s!  Finally something affordable that is extremely useful and also something that a person can have a lot of fun with!  …time to shovel again!!

CB’s can be a real asset…

Hand Held CB RadioImagine if you will, riding through the nature trails on your ATV.  Sure would be nice to have means of communicating with the “outside” world if the ATV your on decides to break down for some unknown reason.  That’s why it’s always important to carry with you a hand held CB Radio.

Soggy conversation??

A great reason why CB Radios are used a lot today (and hand held CB Radios in particular) is that they can be effective where cell phones fail. Cell phones don’t like water. A CB Radio is typically water repellent, however, if you did manage to drop your CB Radio in the water, your next stop would be the nearest electronics store to buy a new one because your old one would no longer be functioning for some strange reason! Let’s make sure our outdoor “fun” includes communication equipment so we can get help if we needed to quickly and this can be accomplished at a very inexpensive dollar amount in today’s world. Be safe, not sorry.

The Spirit of CB Radio Lives On

In the late 1970s and early ’80s, such popular films as “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Convoy” brought trucker culture to the masses. Suddenly the occupation was heralded as more than just a working class task – it was a way to travel around America experiencing adventures along the way. Trucker vernacular also became popular – most notably the coded language they employed to communicate over CB radios.

That tradition has largely died out on dry land, where communication via cell phone is becoming ever more popular. However, the torch is still carried proudly by those adventurers on the water who ride around in recreational boats. A hand held CB radio can be utilized for practical purposes, as in an emergency situation when it’s necessary to call other boaters for help. CBs also provide a source of fun, allowing captains to speak back and forth in a slang language of their own design.

Let’s compare CB Radios…

I just looked up a review site on the internet which looked at the different brands of CB Radios. It showed that of the top 5 positions in customer 29WXNWSTratings when they took a look at CB Radios were taken by Cobra and Midland, with Cobra edging out Midland by 3 to2. Cobra has been around a long time and their product has evolved along with the passing of time. I remember having one installed in my car back further than I really want to remember. Now hand held CB Radios are available with a full 40 channels, plus the NOAA weather channel. This unit may not have the sound quality of a base unit, but the compact size of it allows for concealing it easier in your car or boat so as to not be such an easy, tempting theft item. Many good customer reviews available on this product.
