Crummy sound doesn’t necessarily mean a crummy radio…
A person doesn’t have to stretch his/her imagination too far to come up with a situation where you were listening to a radio and just plain couldn’t tell what they were saying. That could be even on a television set as I know those speakers are not necessarily very high quality. Don’t just go out and shoot your old radio without considering just what kind of speakers that sound is being broadcast though. Maybe the radio is really that bad, but more than likely you can increase the quality of that sound by simply adding (or replacing) the speakers. True, the VHF radios sold now are all digital quality, unless you purchase them used or find a new obsolete one on an auction or something, but having that digital quality is a very fine feature. Very likely you can improve the whole picture of your whole listening pleasure by simply replacing those old speaker with digital quality marine speakers. They are waterproof so weather is no longer a concern. They can be used on your deck or in your back yard to have nice music piped into your relaxing area. Wherever you want them to be, they can be there. Happy Boater.
“Marine speakers” is the way to go…
It sure makes me wonder why in the world some guys invest good money to put a great VHF Marine Radio into their boat and then plug it into some old worn out speakers that probably don’t even have digital sound capability. Since all of the newer marine radios are now digital quality, why not get the best bang for your buck and allow the sound to flow through a speaker that is capable of handling the output from the radio! Your radio may have the capability of putting out great sound, but if you plug it into a “less than desirable” speaker system, you’ve actually gained very little. If you have some trouble with hearing loss, you owe it to yourself to go digital. It makes all the difference in the world. You can actually understand what the person on the other end of the conversation is saying! New concept, hey?? Do yourself a favor and make the switch to digital (marine speakers as well as VHF Radio) - you won’t regret it for a minute! Happy Boater.
Common installation errors some folks make…
You have a brand new pair of marine speakers and are about to install them on your boat or pontoon. There are a couple of things that you should know before you begin. Normally these are relatively easy to install but just because they work doesn’t mean they are installed correctly. Make sure your new speakers are large enough (but not too big so as to waste money when purchasing them) to handle the output of your radio. You don’t want to be installing speakers that forces “8 lane freeway sound” to a “logging road sound”. That would be a shame so always check to make sure what the output is of your radio so you can purchase the correct speakers. Each speaker comes with a template which will allow you to trace around to mark the hole to be cut out. Yep, this is the scariest part. Take your time and you’ll do fine. Choose a spot which will allow the speaker to “breath”. These speaker create a certain amount heat and need breathing room. Don’t put them into a spot which doesn’t allow for heat dissipation. When stringing the speaker wire to the speakers, make sure that you have the same length of speaker wire running to each of your speakers – even if one speaker is only 4 feet from the radio and the other is 12 feet from the radio. Just coil up the excess wire on the short run and all will turn out “just ducky”. Happy Boater.
Why not add sound to your backyard deck?
For years people have been building decks in their back yards. That’s a given. But most of them didn’t enjoy the added dimension of sound when they were done because the technology wasn’t available when the decks were built. Sure – back then you could build boxes for the speakers and try to locate them in a sheltered area (maybe under a roof overhang) so as to protect it from the weather. Sound familiar?? Well, that is no longer necessary and the day has come when you can transform your old unused deck to a center of entertainment. This is easily done with the small investment into a pair of marine speakers. These little speakers are waterproof and therefore you won’t have to “hide” your speakers or be concerned when the wind and rain get them wet. The speakers can easily be mounted wherever you would like them to be and you can just simply forget about them as far as the weather is concerned. What could be easier. Take advantage of the weather this fall season and consider adding that new dimension of sound to your deck. Happy Boater.
Hearing is NOT understanding!
Now there’s a lot of you out there that I know will understand what I’m talking about – especially those of you who have a bit of trouble hearing. When a radio broadcast is heard, it can sound like a bunch of gibberish or it can sound as clear as a bell – and this is highly leveraged toward what kind of speakers the broadcast is being picked up through. Take it from me – there is NOTHING more frustrating that hearing someone say something and not being able to answer because you don’t know what was said because of the quality of the speakers. This is especially true for those of us with hearing problems in the first place. Do yourself a favor and get up to speed with your radio speakers. Trash those old worn out – old technology – speakers and replace them with state of the art marine speakers. These new speakers are not even affected by inclement weather conditions because they are waterproof. Use them even outside on your deck for outdoor parties. There is no longer any reason to have to keep your music inside. Mount your speakers outside and forget them! They will always be there for your listening pleasure!! Happy Boater.
Make sure your speakers are capable of accepting the output of your amp or receiver…
When choosing a sound system for your boat or pontoon, for instance, you want to be informed on the output level of your amplifier (if you use one) or your radio receiver. If your system output is larger than your marine speakers are capable of handling, you are certainly not making the best use of your sound system. It’s much better to error on the side of the receiver than on the speakers. This is because you will obtain a better sound playing a lesser wattage output through speakers that are capable of handling more, than trying to pump those bass notes from a dynamite sound system through a small speaker system that is not capable of handling them. Not a pretty sight (or should I say “sound”). Take the time to do it right. When placing your speakers, make sure the length of your speaker wire is the same length to all speakers. That is, if one of your speakers is 10 feet from the receiver, and the other speaker (in a 2-speaker system) is only 2 feet from the receiver, make sure that you allow 10 feet of wire to the shorter run also and just coil up the unused portion. Have fun with your system!! Happy Boater.
If you can’t understand the words, why listen?
You don’t have to stretch you imagination too far to find someone who has just turned off his/her radio because they couldn’t understand the words of the song they were listening to. Now, granted, some of this problem is directly related to the style of “music” in today’s world, but a lot of it is just because the speakers you are listening to are just plain bad. Why waste your time listening to “garble” when you can obtain clarity and concise listening when you install a pair of the proper size marine speakers into your listening system. Now, just because I said they were marine speakers, it doesn’t naturally follow that you have to be installing them on a boat or pontoon. No – these speakers can easily be placed in your back yard or on a deck so you can bring your music with you when you spend time out of doors. These speakers are water proof so rain and inclement weather won’t even come close to hurting them. So why not change your life style! Bring your music with you and have a great day! Happy Boater.
One less thing to worry about – speakers…
As I look out the window right now, we are having a downpour of rain. Sure – it’s real nice to raise the lake level, clean things up a bit, and give the flowers and trees a drink, but what if you were out on the lake and it started to rain really hard like this. I’m sure the first thing you’d be thinking of if you hadn’t already made the move to install a set of the new design marine speakers on board is something like…”I’ve got to cover up the speakers”. The old design speakers were not impervious to the weather conditions. Rain won’t hurt these speakers – not one bit!! …so enjoy!! Maybe the fish will bite better in the rain…! Life’s too short to worry about your speakers when the fish are biting!! Marine speakers are the way to go. They have the capability of transmitting sound in digital quality so you can FEEL those low notes. The best part is that they are really not an expensive item! Check some out for your boat or pontoon today. Happy Boater.
Doesn’t do any good to have a good radio if you don’t understand what’s said through the speakers!
Garble, Garble, Garble – that’s what it sounds like when someone is trying to reach you if your speakers are faulty. The old style speakers leave a lot to be desired as they get wet, tear, mold, and mice even get in and chew at the membrane. All these things make for impossible communication! The new marine speakers – besides having digital capability – are waterproof which means the weather will no longer bother them. You can mount them anyplace you please on your boat. The cones are backed with a dense styrofoam product and the sound reproduction is incredible. Don’t be one of those that only do half the job – finish the job with the proper speakers when installing a marine radio on your vessel, whether that vessel is a speed boat, fishing boat, or pontoon boat. These new speakers are very reasonably priced in today’s market. Happy Boater.
Music can make it or break it…
Summer is here – warm temps abound (sometimes too much so) – friends and neighbors have more free time…why not book a party?? One neat idea would be to book a party on your pontoon boat! Everyone likes that – after all, they didn’t earn the title “party barge” by accident. When planning this party (either on the boat or in your back yard with outside speakers), make sure you step back a few paces and consider the ages of the folks you will be inviting to your party. That accomplished, choose the type of music most fitting for the age group. Baby boomers may really enjoy “50′s/60′s” music whereas the younger generation may enjoy (although it’s not my taste) hip hop. Now, certainly you can get some of this music by just tuning in a favorite radio station, but why not pre-record you music on your MP3 memory stick or your I-Pod and simply plug it into your marine radio on board the pontoon? The digital format is incredible and when played through a set of marine speakers, it gives it a concert sound that will please all at your party. Your friends will enjoy an evening that they will remember. It’s a time to forget the stresses of the work-a-day world we all live in. Happy Boater.
