When the highways are busy, CB’s are great!
This is Labor Day as I write this. I know it isn’t any surprise to any of you what the highways are like on the afternoon of Labor Day (ANY Labor Day). First – it’s probably the weekend that a lot of folks put away their docks at their cabins, or put away lawn furniture – plus, for a vast majority of kids it signifies the last day of summer vacation because it’s back to school tomorrow!! When the highways are the busiest, it certainly is nice to be able to call ahead a down the road to another CB’er and be able to possibly avoid heavy (or stopped) traffic allowing you to get home on schedule! Yep – having a CB handy (even a hand held CB Radio) can be a real time saver in heavy traffic. I hope everyone’s summer was a great one and that all arrived safely at their destinations. We now have a wonderful fall season to look forward to!! Happy Boater.
CB’s help pass the time of day…
Did you ever ever go out fishing and felt that you should rename the lake you were fishing in the “dead sea”?? I sure have. During those slow fishing times when you even get excited when you catch bottom or a weed, it’s really nice to have a CB radio with (a hand held CB Radio really works nice) and get on line to talk to your other fishin’ buddies or to family back at the cabin. What do you talk about??? Well the important stuff comes to my mind – what’s for dinner and stuff like that! It can really be fun and certainly passes the time of day – and who knows – when you least expect it, you may tie into the lunker you went out for!! Enjoy! Happy Boater.
CB Radios add fun to the gathering!
I can remember when CB Radios were a real fad in the early 60’s. Everyone had them and spent time at night just trying to think up a cute and catchy name (or handle) for their personal use as an identifier for them when on the air. I happened to have owned an ice cream parlor at the time and so I selected the handle “soda jerk” which was what the person behind the ice cream fountain was called. At that time I never got into the CB part of it too much – mainly everyone just rode around and listened to everyone else talk on the radios! It was fun – at least we thought it was fun at the time!! Now days, CB Radios have come back into focus and are widely used by truckers, boaters, school districts, and on construction sites. They even have been used now on search and rescue missions. Since CB’s are so inexpensive now, a lot of folks have a set available as an item of “fun entertainment” for the youngsters at family gatherings! I watched my young nieces play with them a couple of weeks ago and was amazed just how much enjoyment they had by running around the building or around the yard and then talking to the other person via a hand held CB Radio. Sure is nice we have so many great things available to us! Happy Boater.
CB’s the way to go…
Over this past weekend, we invited a friend of my grandson over to enjoy a time at the cabin. They had a big time with a small set of hand held CB Radios. Hard to imagine running out of fun things to do when you have something like a set of CB Radios available! Dick Tracey – move over … here comes the new generation of super sleuths! These radios may be very functional as a safety device and handy as a weather warning device, but why not also class them as the ultimate “imagination station fun center”? No reason they can’t be fun also! A Hand Held CB Radio can go with you on an ATV, in the boat, or simply for a walk in the woods. Happy Boater.
CB brings us in on time for Supper!
We all know just how engrossed we get in our fishing when out on the lake. You always have that anticipation factor that really never goes away, but is stronger it seems just before you go in for the night. It’s not unusual to have that feeling that the next time around (or the next cast) the big one is waiting to bite! I’m sure if you’re honest, we’re all in that same boat with our feelings……
Well, that’s just what happened to me last weekend! Lo and behold, the hand held CB radio squawked and we realized that the gals had cooked supper and were calling us in. Now, that’s not a bad way to end the fishing day – with a great meal! …even if the “big one” eluded us once again.
Happy Boater.
CB’s are nice when fishing…
Sure is nice to be able to communicate with the others in your fishing party when on the water! It’s always good to be able to plan a shore lunch somewhere and coordinate a r0ndevoux point so your crew could all get together. I know from experience that you can’t always believe everything you hear on your communications from others. (you know how fishermen are!) They’ll maybe say they just landed a big fish, but they will never (or rarely) disclose the exact location of where they are fishing. I know that because I heard one of these broadcasts one time and the spot they described what the spot I was sitting at and there were no other boats within site. (it was probably 3 miles from the actual spot) Oh well – fishermen will be fishermen!! I would recommend a hand held CB Radio for this purpose. They have great communication ability and are really very, very portable. Small enough to just slip into your pocket – handy for every situation. Remember – fishing is ALWAYS fun….catching is just a bonus!! Happy Boater.
Marine requirements on small lakes…
The list of actual requirements as I understand it for marine radios and other communication devices to be a part of the equipment on board a small craft on a small lake is a very, very short list – fact is, it really is non-existent as far as I can tell. It would be wise for each boat owner to assess his/her situation – deciding just how far from shore they could be at any one time and thus making the decision as to whether or not a marine radio with a weather channel would be appropriate. Then – it comes right down to basics……checking with home (or your cabin or others on the beach) as to when it’s time to eat! One may consider a CB Radio (maybe 2 hand held CB Radio units) to accomplish that communication link with your friends or family. Beyond that, it boils down to whether or not you want to have fun on the water listening to some of your favorite tunes! This could be accomplished easily with one of the fine marine radio receivers available on the market today – one set up to receive your memory stick as plucked out of your i-pod or your MP3 player. The first step to having a great day on the water if always to be safe and prepare properly for the day. Have fun! Happy Boater.
Demand Creates Apparent Hand Held CB Short Supply
J
ust today I was in contact with a person who was attempting to purchase a hand held CB Radio for personal use. I attempted to get him hooked up with a supplier and was made aware that the item he was trying to buy was out of stock and had been since February of 2010! Supply is supposed to arrive sometime towards the end of the first week in May. That tells me that the CB’rs are alive and well! In a round about sort of way, it’s kinda gratifying to know that there is that much demand for these units – after all, years have gone by us with little or no demand for CB Radios. C’mon you suppliers – let’s get this show on the road and fill the demand! Summer’s on the way and along with that, there will be many more needing these units (i.e. campers, hikers, boaters, and yes – even shoppers!) I know I’ve seen several times in the past few weeks someone talking on a hand held CB Radio (or cell phone) in a department store comparing pricing with another person in another store. Welcome to the shopping world of tomorrow! Happy Boater.
Hand held CB comes in handy!
This weekend I plan to head out for an ice fishing experience on the Lake of the Woods on the US/Canadian border in northern Minnesota. I hope to tell you of the one I “got” rather than the one that “got away” when I return. I would, however, like to take a moment to ponder the “comfort level” you get when you have with you an ability to communicate with those on shore as well as those in other fish houses on the lake. A hand held CB radio can fill that bill nicely! It’s compact, clear, and easy to use. Why not take advantage of the modern day “nice-itys” that we have available today that were only a dream a few years back – and really not that far back. Who knows where this will all end up in the very near future with the digital communication making the strides and achievements they have in recent history! Exciting just to imagine!! Have a good day and wish me luck fishing!! Happy Boater
Soggy conversation??
A great reason why CB Radios are used a lot today (and hand held CB Radios in particular) is that they can be effective where cell phones fail. Cell phones don’t like water. A CB Radio is typically water repellent, however, if you did manage to drop your CB Radio in the water, your next stop would be the nearest electronics store to buy a new one because your old one would no longer be functioning for some strange reason! Let’s make sure our outdoor “fun” includes communication equipment so we can get help if we needed to quickly and this can be accomplished at a very inexpensive dollar amount in today’s world. Be safe, not sorry.
