What’s a Subwoofer?
A subwoofer is a woofer, or a complete loudspeaker dedicated to the reproduction of bass audio frequencies, from perhaps 150 Hz down as far as 20 Hz, or in rare cases lower. 10 or 15 inch subwoofers, also known as “subs”, are used to augment the low frequency performance of main loudspeakers.
Subwoofers are constructed by mounting one or more woofers typically between 8″ and 21″ in diameter in a well-braced wood or plastic cabinet. Passive subwoofers have a subwoofer driver and enclosure; active subwoofers have a built-in amplifier. It used to be that subwoofers were only used in premium home sound systems, but today you can even find marine subwoofers.

Since all speakers are rated as to what sounds they can produce and replicate them effectively, you must consider what quality of speakers you will want when preparing a sound system on your boat.

Frequency determines just how many high notes as well how many low notes you will be able to reproduce on your system. In order to achieve the broadest spectrum, you need only to shop wisely. This could mean the difference between hearing your sound on a speaker the quality of your telephone receiver, or hearing ALL the music with all its treble and bass notes it was intended to include.
